If you're driving from the bay area, be prepared for possible snow driving on Donner pass. And make sure to pack a warm jacket; the pass gets very cold!
Snow is possible any time of year on Donner pass, though it's pretty rare in October (estimated 15% chance).
If the weather forecast predicts snow, read up on snow driving techniques, and buy tire chains before you leave, since tire chains sold on the pass are typically poor quality and have a horrible markup. Do consider paying an installer on the pass to install your chains; they know how to install chains correctly, and you get to stay out of the wet and the cold.
Complimentary airport shuttle service is provided by the hotel.
For updated information, please see the GSR’s Airport Shuttle webpage.
Amtrak website
The Amtrak station is located in downtown Reno.
Walk to the bus station (1 block) and catch bus number 14
(schedule).
The Reno airport is not served by international airlines; you’ll need to land at a larger international airport first. Also consider sharing a car ride with a friend driving from LAX, SFO, LAS, or PHX.
If you need to ship anything to the GSR, please refer to this FedEx document.
